Ochota was incorporated into Warsaw in 1916. The district’s name comes from an inn located in the area in the 19th century. The interwar period marked Ochota’s greatest development, including the construction of modern residential estates and the transformation of Pole Mokotowskie into a popular recreational area. Fortunately, the district was quickly cleared and rebuilt after the war. Today, Ochota is home to one of Warsaw’s most beautiful examples of industrial architecture – the Filtry Waterworks. Designed by British engineer William Lindley and built between 1881 and 1886, this facility was considered one of the most advanced municipal water systems in Europe at the time. Featuring a distinctive brick water tower and a sprawling 33-hectare complex, many of its original components are still in use today, continuing to purify water from the Vistula River.
